At the culmination of a full opening week of action, the Marcellus softball team broke a two-game skid and got its first win of the season Friday, using a pair of late runs to beat Jordan-Elbridge 3-1. On a chilly afternoon, it was little surprise that the pitchers – Molly MacLachlan for the Mustangs, Jenn Gasparek and Erin McLaughlin for the Eagles – controlled matters much of the way. Through three innings, Marcellus led 1-0, getting its run in the top of the second. But J-E got to MacLachlan in the bottm of the fourth, tying it on Liz Caspari’s solo home run. J-E would actually get more hits – six, to five for Marcellus. But MacLachlan constantly escaped with fine defense behind her as she only had three strikeouts. McLaughlin replaced Gasparek in the fifth inning and pitched two shutout frames. However, in the top of the seventh, the Mustangs broke the 1-1 tie, getting the decisive runs. Linda Annan, Sophie Jackson and Jessie Manahan each drove in runs for Marcellus, with Kassie Lema joining Manahan and Annan in the run-scoring column. In OHSL Patriot division action, Bishop Ludden improved to 3-0 on the young season, shutting out Pulaski 9-0. Normally a Class C power, the Blue Devils struggled on this day against Gaelic Knights pitcher Kayla Kibling, who surrendered just three hits and no walks while piling up 13 strikeouts. A close game broke open in the bottom of the fourth, when Ludden erupted for seven runs. Kibling and Jessica Sciore each had three RBIs, while Beth Jerome drove in two runs and Kristen Ryan earned one RBI.
