Near-freezing temperatures did not prevent four local high school baseball teams from spending a Friday afternoon together. Both games turned out to be one-sided, though. Bishop Ludden improved to 3-0 by smashing Solvay 16-1, while Marcellus rode Phil Zdanowski’s brilliant pitching and the power of Allie Ragovin to an 8-0 shutout of Jordan-Elbridge. Ludden did not need one big inning to put Solvay away. Rather, it relied on steady production, starting with four runs off Bearcats starter Matt Fantacone in the top of the first inning. From there, the Gaelic Knights kept up the pace, getting runs in each of the first six innings and building a 16-0 margin before giving up its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan O’Kane, two days removed from pitching a shutout over Cazenovia, hit his second home run of the season, but it was John Rooney that flourished most with a double, triple and five RBIs. Behind Rooney, Matt Pirro drove in two runs as Casey Ganley, Dan Fadden, Ciro Frontale and Cory Hunter joined O’Kane with single RBIs. Pirro and Hunter were impressive on the mound, too, combining to hold Solvay to two hits. Not far away, at J-E, It was Zdanowski’s turn to impress. He didn’t need any relief help in his two-hitter that included 14 strikeouts, against just a pair of walks. Zdanowski got all the offense he required when Marcellus scored three times in the top of the first, and it kept on going as Ragovin proved impossible to get out. He had four of the Mustangs’ 10 hits, including a home run and double, and finished with three RBIs as Adam Breuer and Michael Welsh drove in one run apiece. West Genesee, who had a 3-3 game with Auburn called due to darkness earlier in the week, went all seven innings on Friday and handled Henninger 7-1. A five-run first inning gave Wildcats pitcher Matt Naton ample support, as he went five innings for the win, with Shawn Schlitz working in relief. Brian Burns smashed a solo home run as Greg Wadach produced two RBIs. Eric Spencer and Erik Krohl also drove in runs. A day later, WG lost to Corcoran 4-1, unable to generate much against Cougars pitching ace Jamie Boronczyk as he only allowed three hits.
