Off to an 0-2 start, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team needed to break the skid in a hurry before things got too negative. That mission was fulfilled Wednesday afternoon, when the Mustangs went to Jordan-Elbridge and did enough to record a 13-10 victory over the Eagles. In a fast-paced first half, Marcellus proved to be a few steps quicker, getting a majority of the draws and finishing off scoring attempts to steadily built a 9-5 lead. J-E would fare better on the defensive side in the second half, but could not catch up. Nora Barry’s hot start continued, as she paced the Mustangs by scoring five times. Andrea Burrows and Catherine Nolan each had two goals, while Erin Walter and Meghan Connors each had one goal and one assist. Leea Sinay and Nicole Nolan scored, too. On the Eagles’ side, Emily Dillon, with three goals, and Carrie-Jo Farrugia, with two goals and two assists, led the way. Amanda Wheeler also found the net twice as Ella Thorpe, Chelsea Maitland and Amanda Brown earned one goal apiece. At the same time, Westhill went to Cazenovia and played a strong first half — only to see it all come apart in a 16-14 loss to the Lakers. Led by Caroline Buonocore and Brenna Rainone, the Warriors toyed with Cazenovia’s defense early, attacking at will and scoring just as often. Even though the Lakers had its share of success, Westhill still carried a 10-6 lead to the break. Everything turned around in the second half, though, as Cazenovia started winning draws and finding success in its attack. Also, the Warriors couldn’t put shots past Laker goalie Lauren Devine, who had 14 saves, twice Morgan Roach’s total. In defeat, Buonocore and Rainone each had six goals, with Emily Haggerty feeding them as she got four assists to go with her pair of tallies. Maggie Tripodi and Nicole Velt had assists, too. Gabby Jaquith led the Lakers with five goals and three assists.
