As players (and coaches) have entered and left the picture for the Fayetteville-Manlius girls lacrosse team, one thing has remained constant — they, and everyone else in Section III Class A, is still chasing West Geensee. The Wildcats, winners of the last three sectional titles (and two state championships, too), again established its top form at the Hornets’ expense last Tuesday night in Camillus, handing the visitors a 16-9 defeat. When they met in last year’s Class A semifinals, F-M was resilient to the end, but lost an 11-9 decision. Now, as the Hornets get used to new head coach Kate Noel’s system, it had to encounter a Wildcat squad with lots of veterans eager to reclaim the state throne. All through the first half, the Hornets had a tough time adjusting to WG’s fast, physical pace, and took an 8-2 deficit to the break. To its credit, F-M would respond with a strong second half, nearly playing on even terms. Mollie Caputo, Morgan Same, Kelly Perry and Taylor Robinson each had two goals, with Christina Kousinanidis also finding the net. Sarah Lux joined Caputo and Robinson in the assist column. Carloline Trpcevski had 14 saves. On WG’s side, Morgan Corso had three goals and three assists as Karlyn Tupper (four goals) and Bre Hudgins (three goals, two assists) helped out.
