Eager to take the field and begin its 2010 campaign, the Cazenovia softball team wasted little time showing its stuff at the plate. The Lakers got all the offense it needed in the first two innings of last Monday’s game against Marcelllus, then held on to earn a 6-2 victory over the Mustangs. Knocked out of the opening round of last year’s Section III Class B-1 playoffs by Jordan-Elbridge, Cazenovia looks to improve and move up the OHSL Liberty division ladder. Beating Marcellus was a good place to start. In the bottom of the first inning, the Lakers scored three times off Mustang pitcher Molly MacLachlan, then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second. Kara Stadler led the Lakers, tripling and driving in two runs, while Meaghan Kurucz, Nicole Chiarello, Belle Hoagland and Taylor Malmsheimer each had one RBI. Malsmheimer had the game’s only double. Staked to that big early edge, Kurucz, who started in the pitcher’s circle, blanked Marcellus until the sixth inning, then watched as Chiarello came in to earn the save. It proved more of a struggle on Thursday, when the Lakers went to Westhill and took a 12-4 loss to the Warriors. The first inning proved decisive, as Kurucz got hit hard, Westhill posting seven runs. Chiarello would take over and fare a bit better, and the Lakers would get some production at the plate, too, as Emily Mastropaolo doubled and drove in two runs, while Abby Eschen added an RBI. Westhill stayed out in front, though, as Courtney Morgan belted a home run, double and four RBIs to lead her side and pitcher Tony Secreti struck out 13 Cazenovia hitters.
