On back-to-back nights at the end of March, the Chittenango girls lacrosse team headed off on its 2010 regular-season trek. First, the Bears faced Mexico last Tuesday and, fighting cold wind and driving rain, held on down the stretch for a 9-7 victory over the Tigers. Trying to improve upon last year’s first-round playoff exit (an 18-5 defeat to Jordan-Elbridge), Chittenango played a solid first half, working its way to a 5-2 lead. Though Fulton’s offense picked up in the second half, the Bears kept answering, as much of its production came from a trio of players. Jenna Barber flourished with four goals and three assists. Shannon Sweeney stepped in with three goals and two assists, while Carlie Roman found the net twice. Carly Forman added an assist. Jocelyn Nowak worked in goal, earning seven saves. Just 24 hours later, the Bears stayed home to face Whitesboro, and didn’t show any fatigue, in fact improving upon its opening effort by doubling up on the Warriors in a 14-7 win. Barber’s work alone proved too much, as she finished with five goals and four assists. Hillary Courtwright stepped up, too, with a three-goal hat trick plus an assist, as Sweeney and Katie Putnam each had two goals and one assist. Colleen Regan and Laura Lang had one goal apiece. Chittenango would aim for three straight wins Tuesday, at New Hartford, and will also visit Clinton Thursday afternoon.
