At the end of a busy and important week, Marcellus indoor track and field senior Mike Quercia nearly reached the top at Saturday’s state championship meet at Cornell University’s Barton Hall. In his specialty, the 600-meter run, Quercia won his last of five sections with a time of 1:21.25, nearly a second ahead of Strymar Livingston (Columbus).Of the 33 entrants in the 600, Quercia beat everyone – except Middletown’s Mel Mosley, who prevailed in a time of 1:20.87. Meanwhile, another Mustang runner, Jesse Garn, had a terrific showing in the 1,000-meter run, streaking to third place in 2:32.93, not far behind Liverpool star Zavon Watkins, who won in 2:31.06. However, three runners from West Genesee – Steve Houghmaster, John Delallo and Jake Lafaver – would bring home a state championship from Cornell. As part of the Intersectional Medley Relay, Houghmaster, Delallo and Lafaver joined Eric Bzdick as Section III posted a time of 8:54.49, dominating the event as the only entrant to break the nine-minute mark. Section I finished second in 9:03.83. Also on the boys side, Solvay’s C.J. Brooks had a solid showing in the shot put, taking seventh place with a top toss of 51 feet 1 1/4 inches. Westhill’s Kevin Zych finished 23rd in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:58.15. Fayetteville-Manlius senior Alex Hatz won in 9:23.29, part of an effort that also included a victory in the mile. In the girls state meet, West Genesee’s Laura Leff found her way to 15th place in a clocking of 10:29.65, the best of the three eighth-graders in the event. Leff’s teammate, Katie Bott, earned 24th place in the girls 600-meter run (1:44.01) and was 25th in the 300-meter dash in 44.01 seconds.
