All through the autumn, as he recovered from a kidney ailment suffered in August, Fayetteville-Manlius running star Alex Hatz had to watch from the sidelines as his boys cross country Hornets claimed a state Class AA championship. But Hatz is healed now, and the University of Wisconsin-bound senior let everyone else know it as he won both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter titles at Saturday’s state indoor track and field championship meet at Cornell University’s Barton Hall. In the 3,200, Hatz led two other runners – Burnt Hills’ Otis Ubriaco and Washingtonville’s Martin Hehir – away from the pack. At the finish line, Hatz, in a time of nine minutes, 23.29 seconds, beat Ubriaco by 1.72 seconds and Hehir by 3.49 seconds. Run at half the distance, the mile offers less time for separation, but Hatz still pulled it off. Only Ward Melville’s Quinn Raseman stayed reasonably close, and Hatz finished in 4:20.07, a solid 2.71 seconds ahead of Raseman at the line. As for F-M’s other stars, the Hornets finished third in the girls 4×800 relay as Kathryn Fanning, Katie Sischo, Heather Martin and Courtney Chapman posted a time of 9:22.07, not far from the winning 9:17.78 of Shenendehowa. Individually, Sischo (2:56.61) and Chapman (2:57.27) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,000-meter run. Jamesville-DeWitt’s Bumkoth Jiak also earned a medal, taking fifth place in the 600-meter run in a time of 1:22.33. He also teamed with Tim Kendrick, Ira Griffin and David Salbert to post a qualifying time of 3:32.60 in the 4×400 relay before the Red Rams finished eighth in 3:40.91. Salbert, on his own, had a solid showing in the triple jump, taking ninth place with 44 feet 7 3/4 inches. In the girls shot put, Marae Tearney was 12th (34 feet 5 1/2 inches) as Margaret Fuller tied for 15th in the high jump (5 feet). CBA’s Katie Brislin competed in the 1,500-meter run, earning 17th place in 4:57.77 as J-D’s Liz Pieri and CBA’s Rachel Zajdel joined Nicole Campagna and Nicole Watterud (both from Cicero-North Syracuse) to earn eighth in the intersectional medley relay in 10:48.82.
