West Genesee’s boys indoor track and field team nearly went to the top during last Wednesday night’s CNY Counties League American division championship meet at Manley Field House. The Wildcats amassed 124 points, beating everyone except Corcoran, who nudged its way out in front by earning 134 points. Still, there were plenty of victories, including a 1-2 sweep of the 1,000-meter run where Steve Houghmaster won in a time of 2:36.24 and Sam Reedy was second in 2:39.77. Houghmaster, Reedy, Billy Gabriel and John DeLallo dominated the 4×800 relay, winning in 8:22.97, nearly 10 seconds clear of F-M. Over in the 4×400 relay, Matt Gonnella, Matt Ulrich, Jake Lafaver and Zack Lafaver posted a time of 3:38.40 that beat runner-up Fayetteville-Manlius by more than four seconds. On his own, Jake Lafaver won the 600-meter run in 1:27.69, edging past Corcoran’s Chris Graham (1:28.07), while Ulrich needed 8.37 seconds to edge another Corcoran runner, Antoine Tearney (8.38 seconds), and win the 55-meter hurdles. Ulrich also was fourth in the long jump. Zack Lafaver was third in the 300-meter dash (38.08 seconds) and fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.12 seconds). In the 4×200 relay, Jake Lafaver joined Jeremy Cantello, Tony Terzolo and Brandon Mills to finish second in 1:38.26. DeLallo claimed second in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.32 behind F-M star Alex Hatz (9:08.18), while Matt Serrao (10:36.09) was fourth. Gabriel nearly beat Hatz in the mile, taking second in 4:25.33 behind Hatz (4:24.30) as Martin Leff (4:39.96) finished third. Kyle Ivers took second in the long jump, going 18 feet 9 1/2 inches, while Terzolo was fourth in the triple jump (35 feet 8 1/2 inches). Cantello cleared 10 feet 6 inches for second place in the pole vault. Meanwhile, in the OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet, Marcellus, who won the Section III Class B meet a week earlier, finished second (59 points) to Tully, who won with 113 points. Westhill was third (43 points) with Jordan-Elbridge (35 points) and Solvay (30 points) close behind. Mike Quercia, Tom Riccardi, Jesse Garn and Ryan Manahan tore up the field in the 4×800, its time of 8:29.16 nearly 40 seconds clear of runner-up CBA as Solvay finished third (9:31.16) and Westhill was fourth in 9:33.03. In the 1,000, Quercia and Garn strung pulled away from the rest, as Quercia won in 2:30.58 and Garn was second in 2:30.96. The Mustangs had Nick Huss clear 11 feet 6 inches for second place in the pole vault, with fewer misses than Solvay’s Nick Santoferrara, who was third as Rob Coon got sixth place. Also for Marcellus, Nick Stogsdill earned third place in the high jump (5 feet 8 inches) and Nate Waite was third in the long jump, going 17 feet 7 1/2 inches, as Westhill’s Christian Vadela claimed fifth place to go with his fourth in the shot put. Kevin Zych gave Westhill a victory in the mile in 4:30.17, nearly five seconds ahead of CBA”s Tom Voorheis, as Riccardi got fourth place. Peter Clark, Sal Valenti, Christian St. Amour and Ryan Brennan combined to win the 4×400 relay (3:43.90), with Marcellus fourth, as Clark was third (39.79 seconds) in the 300. On Solvay’s side, C.J. Brooks again dominated the shot put, tossing it 53 feet 9 1/2 inches. John Salvagno (1:30.46) and Mat Morse (1:32.12) were third and fifth, respectively, in the 600. J-E had its big win in the 4×200, where Mike Marrero, Greg Bader, Andrew Conlan and Carlin Coomey prevailed in 1:39.74, just ahead of Westhill (1:39.98) at the wire. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ Cody Stanton tore through the 3,200 in 9:57.51, winning that event as Steve Slonosky (11:01.71) ran to fourth. Coomey also took fourth place in the 600, and Bader was sixth in the 1,000 as Dylan Kirk claimed fourth in the pole vault.
