Everything the Skaneateles girls volleyball team was displaying on its way to the Section III Class B finals suggested that the Lakers’ first championship since 1998 was in the making. The undefeated, no. 2 seed Lakers traveled to Jamesville-DeWitt (where the finals will be held) for Tuesday night’s Class B semifinal against no. 6 seed Marcellus. It proved to be a mere speed bump, as the Lakers swept past the Mustangs in three games, just as it had in two regular-season meetings. A combination of accurate serves and domination at the net helped Skaneateles win the first two games by equally lopsided margins of 25-12. Though the third game proved closer, Marcellus could not extend it as the Lakers, by a 25-23 margin, closed it out. Ryan Merle, with eight kills, four blocks and two aces, led a balanced front line, as Emily Wood got seven kills and three blocks and Katherine Hill earned seven kills, too. On the back line, Gabby Eckles and Destin VanTyle split the duties, each of them earning 12 assists as Alexa Campanile earned three aces and two kills. Marcellus had Samantha Vulcano earn 17 assists as Becca Eddy (six kills), Nicole Fletcher (five kills) and Sara Ryan (four kills) worked on the front line.
