Though each of the local indoor track and field teams had strong showings during Tuesday night’s Section III Class B championship meet at Manley Field House, Marcellus would really stick out. With 90 points, the Mustangs earned the team title, outlasting Clinton, who was second with 83 points. Solvay was third (39 points) and Westhill fourth (34 points), with Jordan-Elbridge sliding into seventh place with 27 points. Mike Quercia was one of the night’s biggest stars, winning three times. He tore to first place in the 300-meter dash in 36.21 seconds, best time of the night, and also won the 600-meter run in 1:26.24. And to cap it off, Quercia went to the 1,000-meter run and, in a time of 2:46.40, beat the field by more than four seconds, with teammate Tom Riccardi (2:52.42) taking third place. Jesse Garn prevailed in the mile in 4:30.28, where J-E’s Greg Bader (4:39.44) finished fourth. Garn also helped Riccardi, Mike Fallon and Ryan Manahan win the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:39.84. J-E’s quartet of Bader, Cody Stanton, Mike Marrero and Steve Slonosky was third (8:56.99) and Solvay was sixth. Nick Huss won his pole-vault duel with Solvay’s Jerry Santoferrara, Huss clearing 12 feet as Santoferrara (11 feet 6 inches) took second place and J-E’s Dylan Kirk (10 feet) finished third. The Mustangs’ Rob Coon cleared 9 feet 6 inches for fifth place. Huss also got to third place in the high jump (5 feet 6 inches), with Nick Stogsdill (5 feet 2 inches) claiming fifth place. Nate Waite was fifth in the long jump, going 17 feet 5 3/4 inches, and sixth in the 55-meter dash. Westhill won the 4×200 relay as Ryan Brennan, Sal Valenti, Pete Clark and Christian St. Amour posted a time of 1:40.93, edging Solvay, which had Taylor Delperuto, John Salvagno, Ed Buczakowski and DeShawn Procks get second place in 1:41.09. J-E and Marcellus were fifth and sixth, respectively. Kevin Zych would prevail in the 3,200-meter run, his time of 9:39.62 more than 10 seconds ahead of Garn (9:49.85) in second place as Stanton finished third in 9:49.96 and Marrero was sixth. The Warriors also got second place in the 4×400 (3:56.79) behind Clinton, well clear of Marcellus in fifth place. Clark was fourth in the 300 (38.76 seconds). Brennan also took sixth in both the long jump and 600, just ahead of teammate Kevin Zych in the latter event. For J-E, Carlin Coomey was fifth in the 600. Solvay’s C.J. Brooks continued to dominate the shot put, winning with a toss of 51 feet 1 1/4 inches, more than six feet clear of the rest of the field. Salvagno ran to fourth in the 600, with Delperuto fourth in the 55 sprint and Buczakowski fourth in the 1,000. West Genesee, competing in the Class AA championships, had 36 points for sixth place in the 12-team field, well off Liverpool’s winning total of 114 points. Steve Houghmaster contended in the mile, settling for second place in 4:29.26 behind Liverpool’s Colin Savage (4:27.45). Houghmaster, Sam Reedy, Billy Gabriel and John DeLallo dueled Liverpool to the wire in the 4×800, but again took second in 8:13.63 as the Warriors won in 8:12.92. Jake Lafaver had a third-place clocking of 1:27.71 in the 600. Gabriel ran to fourth in the 3,200 (9:45.13), with DeLallo fourth in the 1,000 in 2:42.70. Zack Lafaver was fifth in the 300 and Matt Ulrich took sixth in the 55 hurdles. The Wildcats were fifth (1:38.17) in the 4×200 as Jeremy Cantello finished sixth in the pole vault.
