Back from more wins in New York City, the Liverpool boys indoor track and field team proceeded to turn the Section III Class AA championship meet into its own showcase. With a total of 114 points, the Warriors easily got away from runner-up Baldwinsville (71 points) to claim the team championship. Corcoran was third (57 points) and Cicero-North Syracuse, with 25 points, tied for seventh place. Liverpool did make the 4×800 relay exciting, but Chris Clemons, Colin Savage, Alex Wilke and Mychal Ostuni did enough, in a time of 8:12.92, to fend off B’ville (8:13.63) and claim the top spot. It wasn’t as close in the 4×400, where Clemons, Savage and Wilke helped Keewan Rondinello finish in 3:35.42, which beat Corcoran (3:38.79) by more than three seconds. Liverpool was also sixth (1:38.20) in the 4×200 relay. Individually, Zavon Watkins had three different first-place finishes. He ran the 300-meter dash in 37.07 seconds, and also rolled to victory in the 1,000-meter run in 2:37.56, while Wilke (2:42.22) took third place. And in the 600-meter run, Watkins and Clemons went 1-2, with Watkins winning in 1:26.09 and Clemons (1:26.71) taking the runner-up spot. Savage saved his individual title for the mile, where he posted 4:27.45 to beat West Genesee’s Steve Houghmaster by 1.89 seconds. Joe Spernyak just missed winning the 55-meter hurdles, 8.24 seconds to the 8.23 from B’ville’s Andrew Hoover. In field events, Jason Osborne threw the shot put 47 feet 4 1/2 inches, just ahead of CNS’s Jared Thomson (46 feet 8 1/2 inches) in second place. LaQuan Kitchen went 19 feet 9 1/4 inches to finish third in the long jump. Joseph Lona and Joe Alvardo were third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault, each of them clearing 10 feet 6 inches (though Lona had fewer misses). Justin McGriff was sixth in the triple jump. CNS’s Chris Buchanan was third in the 3,200-meter run (9:44.79) and fourth in the mile (4:33.02), with Jared Walther fifth in the 1,000. The Northstars also had Dillon McKee finish fifth in the pole vault and Demetrius Oliver take sixth in the high jump. Walther, Dan Fritz, Alex Bottorff and Mike Kavanagh were fifth in the 4×800 (9:03.90).
