With all the preliminaries cast aside, three local girls volleyball teams — from Chittenango, Vernon Verona Sherrill and Oneida — set out to try and win the Section III Class A title. As the bracket worked out, the no. 7 seed Red Devils and no. 10 seed Bears would meet each other in Tuesday night’s opening round. And despite being the visitors, Chittenango would prevail in three games. Each of the games would be close. In the opener, both sides had equal amounts of winning shots, but VVS missed four serves, and that made the difference as the Bears won 25-23. That trend would continue in the second and third games. Both times, Chittenango did a better job getting the ball in play than VVS, and by doing so, it won the second game 25-22 and the third game 25-20 to close it out. Up front, Brittney Tirabassi had nine kills, while Rachel Antelmi backed up her eight kills with four blocks. Rose Mashie had 11 assists, three aces and two kills. VVS, whose season ended with a record of 8-7, had Rachel Brown pick up 14 assists and eight digs, while Alexis Albro had eight kills and seven digs. Stephanie Siriano earned eight digs, seven assists and five kills as Liz Bush earned five kills. Chittenango will now travel Thursday to face no. 2 seed Homer in the Class A quarterfinals, a team it lost to twice in the regular season. Meanwhile, Oneida, the no. 4 seed, enters the fray by hosting no. 5 seed Watertown in its Class A quarterfinal
