It proved to be a great week for the Westhill girls basketball team – and it hardly took the court for game action. The Warriors’ grip on first place in the OHSL Liberty division tightened when the two main chasers, Bishop Ludden and Marcellus, both lost – the Gaelic Knights to Jordan-Elbridge, the Mustangs to Cazenovia. Then Ludden and Marcellus would face each other. Meanwhile, Westhill stayed in winning form. In its only game of the week Thursday night, Westhill handled its fellow Warriors from Hannibal in a 52-31 decision. For a half, Hannibal was close, only trailing 27-21 at the break. But that turned in a big way when Westhill (14-2) cranked up defensive pressure in the third quarter and nearly shut out Hannibal during a 21-2 spurt. Emily Haggerty remained at the forefront, earning 16 points, while Anna Ross had 10 points. Gwen Dougherty (eight points), Kathryn Christensen (six points) and Kayla Stirpe (five points) were close behind. This leads to a tough final week of the regular season where the Warriors, no. 14 in the state Class B rankings, meet both Cazenovia and Ludden.
