Still on the edge of post-season qualification, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team needed one more win to be sure. At 7-7, the Bees hosted Oswego Tuesday night and were within close range of that win when fate again turned against them in a 43-40 loss to the Buccaneers. B’ville had a near-perfect start, delivering a 15-6 lead, but it could not sustain that margin as Oswego erased most of the deficit by halftime. The Bees were still up, 30-27, as the final period began, but Oswego caught up. B’ville still had a chance to win, though, before the Bucs’ Michelle Canale got a key steal in the final seconds, leading to a lay-up on the other end. Megan Collins and Julia Engels led the Bees with nine points apiece. Claire Monnat had eight points, while Lauren McVey picked up six points. Maggie Monnat had just five points. For Oswego, Lindsay Johnson had 14 points and Katie Abramski earned 10 points. Two nights later, B’ville did get that playoff spot, against Onondaga, taking control early and never looking back as it beat the Tigers 46-32. Applying all kinds of early pressure, the Bees raced out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead, and nursed that margin for the rest of the night. In particular, the defense shut down all of OCS’s other offensive options other than Geena Brady, who finished with 19 points. Meanwhile, the Bees put three players in double figures. Maggie Monnat had 17 points, including all four of her team’s 3- pointers, while Collins finished with 12 points and Claire Monnat earned 10 points. With the pressure to get a playoff berth out of the way, B’ville will visit Nottingham Tuesday and close the regular season next Friday night against Central Square.
