In terms of earning winning records for 2009-10, the East Syracuse-Minoa girls basketball team has reached that goal, and the boys are close. Both sides would win Tuesday night against Fulton, as the girls Spartans improved to 10-6 with a 55-47 victory and the boys beat the Red Raiders 58-53, moving to 9-8 in the process. Playing at home, the ESM girls found 7-8 Fulton to be a pesky foe, as it trailed through most of the first half and were down, 30-28, going to the break. What turned the game around was the way the Spartans played defense in the third quarter, holding the Red Raiders to a scant four points as it went out in front. Through the stretch, ESM would hang on, getting a terrific all-around effort from Mallory Buckley as the senior finished with 18 points. Olivia Luciani had 12 points, including both her team’s 3-pointers, while Chelsea Medler put in 10 points. Alex Casella had six points. Fulton’s Alicia Vann matched Buckley with 18 points of her own. Over in Fulton, the boys Spartans made its own comeback after a middling first half that saw the Red Raiders run out to a 28-24 lead. ESM went ahead in the third period, holding Fulton to eight points, and held on through a series of clutch plays and well-balanced scoring. Quadear Mike had 12 points, with Joe Greco (11 points) and Sharif Nero (10 points) also hitting double figures. Greg Raab had eight points and Steve Lothridge earned seven points.
