After becoming the finest placekicker in the history of the Cazenovia football program, Chris Rogers will head to the college level. Rogers will sign his national letter of intent on Wednesday to attend Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., where he will reap the rewards of a change he made in the middle of his high-school career. At first, Rogers played soccer, making the Cazenovia varsity team. But once he switched to football, Rogers became a weapon Cazenovia could rely on any time it got into scoring position. By the time he was done, Rogers had accumulated 106 total points, including 85 conversions and seven successful field goals. Once, Rogers kicked a 44-yarder through the uprights, setting a school record. With his kicks, the Lakers advanced to last fall’s Section III Class C final before losing to General Brown. For that, Rogers was named a Class C first-team All-State selection in 2009. He was also a second-team All-Central New York choice in both his junior and senior campaigns, as well as an All-League honoree. Sacred Heart plays in the Division I Football Championship Series subdivision as part of the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers went 2-8 a season ago.
