Each of the Jordan-Elbridge, Solvay and Marcellus wrestling teams would find themselves traveling to Port Byron Saturday for the Onondaga High School League Liberty/Patriot Division Tournament. And they would find some success, with the Eagles fourth, Bearcats fifth and Mustangs seventh among Liberty entrants. Cazenovia finished on top. J-E’s Mitch Alpha earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the Liberty portion of the meet. He won the 103-pound title by pinning Marshall Touron (Cato-Meridian) in 1:10, then getting a pin on Phoenix’s Austin Brutcher in 2:44 to reach the finals. There, Alpha pinned Cazenovia’s Brad Nardella in overtime. Over at 112 pounds, Mike Nguyen gave J-E another title, toppling Hannibal’s Joe Griffin 3-1 in the semifinals before beating Cazenovia’s Ryan Cook 8-2 in the title match. Preston Bishop reached the 125-pound final, but lost to Kevin Pembridge (Skaneateles) 3-0. Mitch Cooper was fourth at 140 pounds, with Adam VanWart sixth at 96 pounds. For Solvay, Conor Cosgrove earned the 215-pound championship. He pinned Aaron Murphy (Marcellus) in 3:03 and got a third-period pin of Brandon Stevens (Onondaga) before shutting out Tully’s Drew Wintermute 7-0 in the finals. Tyler Avery advanced to the 135-pound title match, only to lose to Tully’s Calvin DeCarlo. Mike Warne was fourth at 152 pounds and Kevin Fox got fourth at 285 pounds. Marcellus saw Matt Dempsey (130 pounds) and Aaron Murphy (215 pounds) both take fourth place. Earlier in the week, J-E had prevailed in a non-league meet at Oswego, overcoming a slow start to beat the Buccaneers 37-27. Jesse Dexter, at 145 pounds, claimed an opening forfeit, but Oswego answered by winning four straight matches as it dominated the upper weight classes and took a 24-6 lead. All that turned at 103, though, when Trevor Pettitt pinned Matt DiFabio in 1:56, after which Nguyen (112) and Collin Ennulat (119) both took forfeits. Bishop did wrestle, at 125, rolling past Anthony Todaro 13-4 as Joe Mills (130) took just 1:49 to pin Austin Gilbert. Kalys Zhumakadyruulu clinched the meet when he held Kyle Rossi to a 3-1 decision at 135 before ooper beat Adam Doviak 8-3. The post-season continues this Saturday, as Solvay and West Genesee to the Section III Class AA championships at Cicero-North Syracuse, with J-E and Marcellus heading to South Jefferson for the Class B meet.
