High honors continued to flow to the Skaneateles girls volleyball team as it moved closer to finishing off an undefeated regular season. The Lakers’ senior trio of Ryan Merle, Katherine Hill and Emily Wood received Channel 9 “Athlete of the Week” honors just before the Lakers went to Solvay Wednesday night and swept the Bearcats 25-13, 25-23, 25-16. Each of the seniors played a big role, as usual. Merle finished with seven kills against Solvay, while Hill got five kills and Wood added four kills, plus four aces. Offering the help from the back line, Destin VanTyle posted seven assists and Gabby Eckles earned six assists, while Alexa Campanile had three kills and two aces. Colleen Cargile finished with three assists. Solvay saw Calla Bakowski earn 10 assists and three kills. Two nights later, at Phoenix, the Lakers ripped the Firebirds 25-9, 25-14, 25-16. Merle had six aces to go with four kills, as Hill earned five kills and Wood got three kills and three blocks. VanTyle had seven assists, four kills and two aces, while Eckles contributed six assists and three aces. Campanile served up three aces. The entire undefeated season may hinge on Skaneateles beating rival Cazenovia Thursday night on the other Lakers’ cozy home court at Buckley Gym. On that night, both Skaneateles and Cazenovia will team up to raise money for the Leukemia Society in honor of Taylor Matt, a Cazenovia High School senior battling leukemia who is searching for a bone marrow transplant.
