Canastota’s girls volleyball team is now just two home victories, against Morrisville-Eaton and Adriondack, away from an undefeated regular season. The Raiders moved to 16-0 Friday night when it went to Sauquoit Valley and needed four games to fight past the Indians. Both of the first two games were one-sided affairs, as Canastota won by scores of 25-13 and 25-7. When Sauquoit rallied to take the third game 26-24 and made the fourth game close, the Raiders responded by closing out the match 24-20. Jessica Patterelli mixed in 25 assists with 18 digs, adding eight kills and three aces. Denae Rinaldo worked her way to 20 kills and 11 digs. Also for Canastota, Katelyn Rounds mixed in six kills with 10 digs, while Tracy O’Hern got three kills, five blocks and five digs. Francesca Benassi (14 digs, eight kills) and Jessica Smith (23 assists) led Sauquoit’s effort. On that same Friday night, Hamilton improved to 14-3 on the season, beating Mount Markham in four games. After losing the opener 25-22, the Emerald Knights responded by winning the next three games over the Mustangs 25-14, 25-17 and 25-18. Tiffany Jones-Maxwell had 14 kills and four digs, while Kaitlyn Askew produced eight assists. Morgan Brooks had six digs and five aces. And in boys volleyball action, Vernon Verona Sherrill won a long opening game over Westmoreland and used that as the spark for a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs. Down 24-21 in the first game, the Red Devils saved three game points, then kept staying alive until it pulled out the game 32-30. Then, after winning the second game 25-22, VVS again rallied from 24-21 down to win the last five points of the third game and complete the 26-24 sweep. Tyler Curtis, with 13 kills, led a busy front line where Aaron Owens had nine kills, with Drew Foster and Josh Masi each earning eight kills. Cole Barbano fed them with 32 assists, as Andrew Aurigema had 11 digs. Jake Voelker (six digs), Kyle Renwick and Steve Geer (four digs each) helped on the defensive end.
