Both the Oneida and Vernon Verona Sherrill girls volleyball teams strove to maintain winning records within the Tri-Valley League — and did so with comebacks. The Indians lost the first game of last Tuesday’s match to Holland Patent 25-19, but went on to dominate the rest of the match, ripping the Golden Knights by one-sided margins of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-14. On the front line, Rachael Kline had 12 kills, while Clare Henry got 11 kills and nine digs, and Paige Pendleton finished with seven kills. Shannon Dowling fed them with 16 assists. VVS did much the same thing against Camden, beaten badly 25-12 in the first game, but pulling out tight 25-23 decisions in each of the next two games before dominating the fourth game 25-12 to close it out. Rachel Brown had 15 assists, six kills, three aces and two digs, while Stephanie Siriano had 10 assists, six digs and four kills. Alexis Albro picked up six kills, four aces and seven digs as Liz Bush contributed five kills. Now they reversed opponents, with VVS facing HP on Friday and Oneida taking on Camden Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils would survive a five-game epic with the Golden Knights, winning the first two games 25-14 and 25-22, and coming within inches of a sweep before HP took the third game 26-24 and the fourth game 25-23. Instead of being crippled by the near-misses, though, VVS stood up and dominated the fifth game to win the match 25-12. Siriano gained 10 kills, five assists, five aces and four digs, while Bush had nine kills and six aces, plus four blocks. Albro had seven kills and seven digs as Missy Meyers contributed 10 digs and four kills. Oneida would also win, taking out Camden in four as it won the opener 25-17, lost a close second game 27-25, then finished it off 25-20 and 25-13. Pendleton had a team-best 13 kills, with Kline getting eight kills and four blocks. Carly Parker and Candra Connelly each picked up five kills as Dowling earned 18 assists and four aces, and Melissa Murawski (nine assists) also worked on the back line. Chittenango returned to the court Wednesday night, unable to pluck a game from OHSL Freedom division leader Christian Brothers Academy in a 25-22, 25-10, 25-12 defeat. Rachel Antelmi put together five kills and three blocks, with Kaylie Searle earning six assists. Rose Mashie and Brittney Tirabassi each had three kills. CBA featured Alex Horowitch, with 25 assists, feeding it to Jessie Bongiovanni and Emily Norkett (11 kills each) on the front line. Two nights later, the Bears lost again at home, this time to Mexico, winning the second game, but otherwise struggling in a 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18 defeat to the Tigers. Tirabassi led the front line with 11 kills, while Antelmi earned five kill and three blocks. Mashie had 11 assists and joined Jenna Barber with four kills as Hayley Calarco gathered up 16 assists, three aces and two kills.
