Another split of two games left the Baldwinsville girls basketball team at 7-6, but still wondering if it could move higher. Such a chance arose in last Tuesday’s game at Liverpool, where the Bees made a series of comeback attempts, but could not make any of them stick in a 53-44 loss to the Warriors. Liverpool, undergoing a mid-season revival, threatened to end things early, seizing a 10-0 lead in the game’s first three minutes and forcing head coach Kathy Morse to use an early time-out. Remarkably, B’ville did not allow a point for more than seven minutes and tied it, 10-10, before the start of the second quarter. But with Liverpool’s Nina Tassone hitting on four 3-pointers, the Warriors reclaimed a 25-19 edge by halftime. B’ville closed within one, 25-24, early in the third quarter. The Warriors would stretch out the margin later in that period, only to have the Bees pull back within three, 40-37, on Claire Monnat’s 3-pointer early in the final period. No matter what it tried, though, B’ville could not make the sustained run and catch up, as Claire Monnat got 13 points and Maggie Monnat eight points. Julia Engels, Megan Collins and Lauren McVey got six points apiece. While Tassone cooled off (she still finished with 14 points), her Liverpool teammates picked up their production, as Nicole Ciricillo had 13 points and Ally Zywicki got all 12 of her points after the break. B’ville looked to bounce back at home against Henninger Thursday night — and did so, taking charge early and earning a 52-34 victory over the Black Knights. All through the first half, the Bees’ defensive pressure drove Henninger to turnovers, and it produced a 24-10 advantage. Henninger closed within single digits, 31-23, before B’ville got away in the fourth quarter. McVey, taking a much larger role in the offense, poured in 18 points, while Claire Monnat had 10 points. All of Engels’ nine points came from a trio of 3-pointers as Liz Giromini also had nine points. Shalisia Jackson, the first Henninger player to ever surpass 1,000 career points, led her side with 21 points. Now B’ville gets a full week to rest, take exams, and prepare to face Breanna Stewart and defending Class AA champion Cicero-North Syracuse next Friday night.
