Both of the Fayetteville-Manlius basketball teams would go beyond regulation in games against Nottingham Tuesday night. In the boys meeting at the “Hornets Nest”, F-M was headed for a loss until a single Brian Zapisek 3-pointer led to a domination of overtime and a 75-61 victory over the Bulldogs. When F-M (9-3) led 19-11 after one period, all looked to be normal — but slowly, methodically, Nottingham chipped away at that margin, led by Roosevelt Bullock, who would get 31 points (including three 3-pointers) as Mabior Mayen added 17 points. By the fourth quarter, Nottingham was in front, despite the Hornets’ best effort, and as regulation time wound down, F-M was down 59-56. Only Zapisek could rescue things — and when his 3-pointer found the net just before the buzzer, F-M fans roared, and Nottingham’s players saw its spirits sag. Through the four minutes of OT, it was all Hornets, a 16-2 margin as Zapisek worked his total to 29 points (including four 3-pointers) and Jack Giles proved just as hot, earning 25 points. Mike O’Neil had seven points and Connor Chen got six points. As this went on, F-M’s girls team nearly suffered its second loss of the season at Nottingham, trailing 20-12 at halftime to the Bulldogs. The Hornets’ defense tightened, and F-M (10-1) inched back, catching up at the end of regulation 34-34 and holding the Bulldogs to a scant free throw in OT. Emily Trapani had 16 points, while Charlotte Beers got seven points and Alexis Rios earned six points.
