In a massive local gathering, Vernon Verona Sherrill welcomed 16 other wrestling teams from the Mohawk Valley area for the annual Central New York League Touranment last Saturday afternoon. It proved quite close at the top, where Adirondack, with 167.5 points, held off Holland Patent (162 points) to prevail. The hosts from VVS were fifth, with 130 points, as Oneida claimed seventh place with 119 points. Morrisville-Eaton (36 points) tied for 12th. VVS may have gone higher in the standings with better results in the championship round. Four Red Devils got there, but only one, Dan Walts, prevailed, shutting out Adirondack’s Kevin O’Rourke 7-0. Walts had pinned Christian Rivera (Whitesboro) and Ryan Waite (Ilion) to reach that title match. Elsewhere, Alex Mieczkowski had a tough 171-pound final, but could not get on the board in a 2-0 defeat to Ilion’s Jon Treen. Kyle Reader (215 pounds) met the same fate, staying undefeated until Mike Barse (Mohawk) beat him 7-3 in the finals, while Kasey Proper, in the 96-pound final, lost when Ilion’s Laken Cook pinned him at the end of the second period. Also for VVS, Nathan Walts was fourth at 140 pounds, while Nick Mieczkowski hit that same spot at 189 pounds after a 2-1 defeat to Mike Judson (Mohawk) in the semifinals. Oneida did not have any champions, and only Lon Palmer got to the finals, at 145 pounds. He beat Chris Broccoli (New Hartford) 13-3, then edged past Kaleb Smith (Dolgeville) 6-5 in the semifinals before Sherburne-Earlville’s Danny Cleveland beat him 5-1 in the finals. In six consolation matches, the Indians went 3-3. Nick Hopkins (119 pounds) held off S-E’s Alec Sheddon 3-1, while Connor Lomonaco, at 140, beat Nathan Walts 8-2 and Steve Ellsworth (160 pounds) did just enough to beat Cody Buhler (Adirondack) 9-8. Though not as successful, Joe Casella (125 pounds), Matt Fisher (135 pounds) and Jon Holbrooks (285 pounds) all took fourth place, with Fisher coming close in a 3-1 defeat to Frankfort-Schuyler’s Matt Prentice. Zach McGuinness seized sixth place at 96 pounds. For Morrisville-Eaton, Shane Strong advanced to the 285-pound final. Strong pinned Kris Jones (Whitesboro) in 2:52 in the quarterfinals, then got past Travis Streeter (Ilion) 5-4 in the semifinals before Holland Patent’s Matt Rees pinned him in the finals. Dalton Villnave was third at 189 pounds, beating Nick Mieczkowski 5-1 for that honor.
