By gaining easy victories over the bottom two entries in the OHSL Liberty division, the Skaneateles boys basketball team improved to 10-1 — and more importantly, set up a possible league championship run. First, the Lakers traveled to Hannibal last Tuesday night, having its way throughout a 62-27 romp over the Warriors. All Hannibal could manage in the first quarter was a single field goal, a sign of what was to come. Skaneateles varied in point production, but the defense remained constant as it again stood up in the third period, holding the Warriors to four points. Kevin Rice finished with 19 points, seven of them from free throws. Tom Schoener had 10 points, while Justin Sisson had eight points. Kyle McQuiggan and Pat Roberts earned six points apiece. Things were just as simple in Thursday night’s home game against Phoenix, where the Lakers took out the Firebirds 65-42. It wasn’t a romp right away, though. Skaneateles had a difficult time establishing its attack, so it leaned back on defense, especially in the second quarter, when it held Phoenix to six points to spread its margin to 27-16. But the Lakers erupted in the third period, nearly doubling its output and extending its lead to 52-33. In the process, Rice worked his way to 18 points, while Schoener and Paul O’Donnell each got 12 points and Roberts improved to nine points. All this sets up the most ambitious road trip of the Lakers’ season, as it must go to Bishop Grimes on Wednesday and Marcellus on Friday night. Skaneateles had memorable home games with both these teams in December, suffering its only loss of the season to the Cobras before erasing a 10-point deficit in the final two minutes to stun the rival Mustangs.
