In a week where Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt winter sports teams would compete together and against each other on several fronts, the hockey merger of J-D and CBA took a particularly large role. Twice in a span of three nights, the CBA/J-D squad would host crucial Division II West games at Onondaga Nation Arena, the biggest one coming Thursday night against Corcoran, with whom it is fighting for playoff position. With a defeat looming, the Brothers, led by Nick Papayanakos, made a spirited late comeback and pulled out a 2-2 tie with the Cougars. All through the first two periods, Corcoran staged a constant attack, forcing CBA/J-D into long-term defensive mode. Yet all the Cougars could manage was single goals by Erik Kurz and Josh Domanski. That marked a tribute to a hard-working back line and the remarkable work of goaltender Dan DiStefano, who finished with 44 saves. DiStefano gave CBA/J-D a chance — and in the third period, down 2-0, the Brothers rallied. Papayanakos got the Brothers on the board with a goal, then scored again to pull his team even as Harry Kalet, Deke Burns and Brendan Flanagan came up with assists. Stunned, Corcoran went into overtime and charged again, but CBA/J-D held them off and salvaged the single point to move to 7-2-1 in league play, just ahead of the Cougars (7-3-1) as they both chased first-place Skaneateles.
