West Genesee’s indoor track team avoided most of the Manley work in the first full week of January, but did make some noise at the Jan. 9 Southern Tier Invitational at Cornell University, where the state meet will be held in March. Eighth-grader Laura Leff nearly won the 3,000-meter run, working her way to second place in a time of 10:33.57, behind only Webster Thomas’ Brianna Deming, who won in 10:25.21. Katie Bott rose to third place in the girls 600-meter run in a time of 1:43.38, while Amy Hannahan was 12th in the 1,000-meter run (3:20.86). On the boys end, Jake Lafaver earned fourth place in the 600-meter run in 1:26.35, with Zack Lafaver in 18th place. Sam Reedy was sixth in the 1,000 (2:40.78) as John DeLallo finished 11th. Matt Ulrich reached the finals of the 55-meter hurdles, where he was seventh in 8.32 seconds. When action at Manley resumed Monday with the John Arcaro Memorial Invitational, Marcellus earned 17 points, with Solvay adding eight points. The Mustangs dominated the 500-meter run, where Mike Quercia won in a time of 1:05.35 and teammate Jesse Garn took third place in 1:08.29. Solvay’s Jerry Santoferrara took second in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet 6 inches. Only Tully’s Zach Stewart (12 feet) fared better. Jordan-Elbridge saw Cody Stanton run to fifth place in the 3,200-meter event (9:10.92). Westhill’s lone point came from a sixth (2:13.25) in the sprint medley relay. The George Constantino Invitational came on Wednesday night, and West Genesee worked its way to fourth place on the boys side with 31 points as Solvay claimed ninth place (17 points) and Marcellus was 11th with 14 points. In the 4×200 relay, the Wildcats proved victorious as Zack Lafaver, Jake Lafaver, Kyle Ivers and Tony Terzolo hit the line in 1:35.77, 0.78 seconds ahead of runner-up Corcoran. WG was also third in the 4×400 relay as the Lafavers, plus Reedy and DeLallo, posted a time of 3:35.89. Ulrich was second in the 55 hurdles in 8.18 seconds, inches behind Liverpool’s Joe Spernyak (8.17 seconds), while Steve Houghmaster had a third-place showing (4:35 flat) in the mile. For Solvay, C.J. Brooks again ruled in the shot put, his toss of 49 feet 3 3/4 inches topping Liverpool’s Jason Osborne by 16 inches. Jerry Santoferrara cleared 11 feet in the pole vault and was second to Tully’s Zach Stewart (12 feet), with WG’s Jeremy Cantello in sixth place. Marcellus moved its act to the 1,000-meter run, as Quercia finished second (2:33.27) to F-M’s Alex Hatz (2:30.27) and Garn was fourth in 2:35.50. In the 600-meter run, Quercia had a fifth-place clocking of 1:27.17. WG’s girls team was eighth with 14 points, while Westhill tied for 10th (12 points) and Marcellus got nine points. Leff returned in the 1,500-meter run, claiming second place in 4:54.76 as F-M’s Mackenzie Carter (4:46.33) prevailed. The Wildcats’ 4×400 relay quartet of Bott, Hannahan, Alex Incaudo and Kelly Powell finished third in 4:23.52. Westhill had Paula Sanz tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet 6 inches, while Morgan Roach got fourth in the shot put (32 feet 5 inches) and Brenna Rainone took fourth (7.75 seconds) in the 55-meter dash. Laura Quercia gave Marcellus a second-place effort in the 600-meter run, her time of 1:44.29 just behind Auburn’s Patricia Fleishman (1:43.91).
