As the host of its own Duke Schneider Tournament on the second weekend of 2010, the Skaneateles ice hockey team wanted to keep the main prize at home — but could not quite pull it off. The fact that the Lakers brought a great field to Allyn Arena was apparent in Friday night’s opening round, when Skaneateles needed overtime to fight past Canandaigua 3-2. A pair of early goals quickly put the Lakers in front, and that 2-1 edge held up for a long time. But the Braves pulled even in the third period, requiring Skaneteles to go to overtime and fetch home the game-winner. Zach Augustine earned two goals, with Packy Jones earning the other tally. Jim Rodgers and Sean Cooney earned one assist apiece. Trevor Diamond’s shutout streak ended, but he still turned away 26 of the 28 shots he faced. In the finals Saturday afternoon, the Lakers had to face Williamsville South, from the Buffalo suburbs — who proved to be too good, prevailing by a score of 3-0. Alex Hahn, all by himself, made the difference, as the Billies forward earned one goal in each period and finished with the hat trick. Diamond had 31 saves, but none of the Lakers’ 16 shots got past South goaltender Matt Weinberg. Prior to the tournament, the Lakers, feeling quite good after its 1-0 win over Cortland/Homer on Jan. 2, returned home to Allyn Arena last Wednesday night and earned another shutout, beating Ontario Bay 5-0. Both teams had the same number of chances, but once again Laker goaltender Trevor Diamond came up big, stopping all 25 shots he faced. Meanwhile, the steady, balanced Laker attack forged a 4-0 edge through two periods. Dan Tarolli scored twice, with Jones and Cooney each getting one goal and one assist. Jake Bird also found the net as Jon Rogalia and John Bronk earned single assists. The defeat to Williamsville South left the Lakers at 9-3 as it worked toward Friday night’s visit to State Fair Coliseum to face Solvay.
