West Genesee’s wrestling team made its firs CNY Counties League match of 2010 a successful one, claiming a 40-30 victory over Rome Free Academy last Wednesday night in Camillus. The Wildcats claimed four of the first five matches to seize quick control. Jason Fitch (130 pounds)won by forfeit before Jason Heggelke, at 135 pounds, took just 1:22 to pin Josh Knapp. Erik Krohl (145 pounds) shut out James Yates 9-0 and Heitham Wady, at 152 pounds, took 1:13 to pin DeVante Marshall. RFA got back into contention by winning the next four matches, but Logan Kirk (103 pounds) turned it around again with a pin over Tyler Christman in 1:20. Tyler Heggelke (112 pounds) claimed a forfeit. It all rode on the 119-pound finale, where WG’s Ian Collican had to avoid at least a major decision loss to the Black Knights’ Joshua Williams. Coolican avoided all the drama, pinning Williams at the end of the first period. A night earlier, Solvay/Westhill could not keep Skaneateles from earning its first OHSL Liberty division win of the season in a 39-30 decision. The Bearcats won more head-to-head matches, but paid for not having a wrestler in each weight class as it had to forfeit five different times. Meanwhile, Conor Cosgrove (189 pounds) took 26 seconds to pin Ryan Kawyrga and Shawn Abraham (215 pounds) finished off Jacob Kipp 22 seconds into the second period, just two of four Solvay/Westhill pins on the night. Tyler Avery won at 130 pounds, pinning Ryan Dick in 1:27, with Mike Warne (152 pounds) taking 3:47 to earn his fall over Chad Gray. Mitch Anthony claimed a 145-pound forfeit. Marcellus only had two match victories Wednesday in a 59-6 defeat to Cazenovia. Rich Ghezzi prevailed at 119 pounds, toppling Dylan Evans 5-1, while Sam Eberle (145 pounds) blanked Teddy Tormey 3-0. Matt Dempsey got close at 130 pounds before falling to Jake Wilson 6-4.
