The Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce honored Syracuse's 'green' Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll's dedication to creating a sustainable community with a tree planted in Jefferson Clinton Commons, Monday, Sept. 21.
Under Mayor Driscoll's leadership, the city of Syracuse's action plan for energy conservation and the environment has made Syracuse a leader not only among cities in New York State but on a national level as well.
"Mayor Driscoll has been a driving force in positioning the city of Syracuse and the Central New York region as a leader in green technology," said Darlene Kerr, Syracuse Chamber President. "Syracuse is the Emerald City thanks to Mayor Driscoll."
"It is an honor to have the acknowledgement of the Chamber for environmental accomplishments that have benefited our city now and in the years to come. This tree is an appropriate symbol of sustainability and the beauty of nature," Driscoll said. "I am most appreciative."
A Red Sunset Maple was chosen to honor the Mayor's dedication to Syracuse because it's glossy green leaves turn brilliant orange-scarlet in the fall and is known to be one of the most robust and colorful of the maple trees.
