Learn more about the harp

The CNY Chapter of the American Harp Society and A Harmony of Harps will present three harp workshops Oct. 3 in Baldwinsville.

"Our goal is to advance the appreciation and enjoyment of the harp and harp music," said Nancy Haney, a coordinator of the event.

The workshops, which include two morning (Irish Harp Music or The Harp is for You) and one afternoon (Playing in a Harp ensemble), will be held at the First Presbyterian Church (64 Oswego St. in Baldwinsville). Following the workshops, celebrity Harpist Nancy Hurrell will perform a concert. Hurrell plays a wide variety of music, including classical and jazz, and is also known for her performances of Irish and Scottish music and for early music. The concert is open to the public; tickets are $12 each.

Hurrell began her studies of music and art at the University of Texas and continued classical harp study in Wales. She completed a postgraduate diploma at Trinity College in Carmarthen, Wales, and later received her M.M. in harp performance from T.C.U. Hurrell has several CDs and her books of harp arrangements are used by players around the world.
