Joe Nicoletti, Democratic candidate for mayor, unveiled his detailed plans for improving our public school system. The press conference was held on the steps of Central Tech, a technical/vocational school that is in need of major renovations.
It is imperative that we foster a positive relationship between city government and the school district, said Nicoletti, In order to rise above the contentious relationship of years past, the next mayor must have the vision to improve schools and the temperament to examine the issues from multiple perspectives. By working together, we will be able to provide every student with the quality education they need to achieve their dreams.
Among Nicoletti's specific proposals is the reestablishment of the post of federal and state aid coordinator, committing Say Yes to Education as a permanent line item in the city budget, and creating a vocational/apprenticeship program within our public schools. Technical programs are vital to a district-wide education plan. Utilizing schools like Central Tech and creating new programs, motivated students will graduate with real work experience and be on track towards establishing themselves within their chosen trade.
As the press conference came to a close, Nicoletti pledged to hold regular meetings with the superintendent and school board members at least once per month. I look forward to working with the district and improving our educational programs, because together we can truly make a difference in the lives of our children.
