Peterboro history at New York State Fair

Members of the heritage sites and projects in the town of Smithfield hosted an exhibit at the Vision New York initiative in the Center of Progress Building at the New York State Fair Aug. 27 to Sept. 7. Scott Hughes, a member of the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) Cabinet Promotion Committee created, built, and installed a replica of the Smithfield Community Center in which to display the Hall of Fame banners for 19th Century abolitionists, show a National Park Service video on Gerrit Smith, and to support the familiar military figures announcing the Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend in June 2010. Members of the NAHOF Cabinet of Freedom, Stewards of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark, and committee members for Civil War Weekend described the heritage developments in Peterboro and explained the location of Peterboro throughout the twelve days of the Fair.
