Browse through more than 10,000 books when the annual used book sale benefiting the Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse returns Sept. 10.
The 19th annual, five-day event, held on the museum grounds at 46 Canton St. in the village's McHarrie Park, relies upon generous donations of gently used books and hundreds of volunteer hours to prepare and conduct. Both hard covers and paperback books are arranged by category including fiction, mystery, biography, gardening, cooking, history, craft, travel, religion, philosophy, military and more. Last year's sale offered 42 categories. A large selection of children's books are also available.
The sale is set up under large tents on the museum's south lawn. Ample free parking is available on the grounds.
Sale hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
Donations of used books are accepted throughout the year from Oct. 1 through mid-August. The day before school opens, the huge inventory of books is moved from the storage area to the museum by Baldwinsville's varsity football team. The annual book sale, which is the museum's primary fundraiser, opens each year on the Thursday following Labor Day.
Located in a restored
19th century schoolhouse, the museum is open year round. Dedicated to local history, the museum collects and preserves Baldwinsville artifacts and archival material. It offers changing exhibitions, research opportunities, programs and special events throughout the year. Its signature project is the preservation of Baldwinsville's rich peony farm history. The museum gift shop specializes in Baldwinsville items as well as local history books. The museum has no paid employees and operates solely with a volunteer staff.
Museum hours are from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free. For further information call 638-2452 or visit the museum online at shacksboromuseum.com.
The varsity football team from Baldwinsville's Baker High School facilitates the annual book sale at The Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse by moving more than 10,000 volumes each year from storage to the museum grounds. With the team's help again this year, the sale will run from Sept. 10 to 14.
