Lysander, Van Buren candidate profiles

Eleven seats are open between the towns of Lysander and Van Buren this election season. Ten of those 11 are uncontested and include the Van Buren Supervisor seat, town councilor seats (three for Van Buren and two for Lysander), town justice seats (one for Lysander and Van Buren), and highway superintendents (both Lysander and Van Buren). The Baldwinsville Messenger recently asked uncontested incumbents to share a little about their experience, both politically and professionally, their families and their involvement with the community.

Claude E. Sykes

Position: Van Buren Supervisor

Political Experience: Two years as supervisor, two years as councilor

Community Involvement: Member of Community Wesleyan Church - B'ville and church board member, past trustee of church

Professional Experience: Worked as Village of Baldwinsville Superintendent of Public Works for 26 years, water superintendent for six years prior; President of CNY Waterworks conference for six years, State Director for NYS Rural Water Association, acted as Village of Baldwinsville Stormwater Coordinator. Licensed water plant operator.

Family: Married with three adult, married children; four grandchildren and two on the way.

Political Affiliation: Republican, also endorsed by Independence and Conservative parties

Political Experience: Lysander Town Councilor since 2004, Deputy Town Supervisor since 2007; board liaison to planning board, parks and recreation commission, personnel committee and public safety committee; member of Ad Hoc Committee for zoning and planning
