Library presents a journey along the Underground Railroad

The Petit Branch Library will host the third in a series of four Speakers in the Humanities lectures at 2 p.m., Oct. 31. Dr. Milton C. Sernett, Syracuse University Professor Emeritus of African American Studies and History, will present the lecture, "North Star Shining: New York State's Freedom Trail--An Illustrated Journey Along the Underground Railroad."

The illustrated talk will place the story of the Underground Railroad in the context of the religious and reform movements of the pre-Civil War period, including endeavors such as the temperance crusade and the women's rights campaign. The lecture is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The program is free and open to the general public.
