A cappella Noel-a: A vocal treat

Treat your ears to a harmonious performance this Sunday.

noXcuse and Closer Still will perform an a cappella concert from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 22 featuring pop, doo-wop, rock, original pieces and more at the Presbyterian Education Center in Baldwinsville.

"There are sounds you wouldn't think a voice could make. It sounds like you're listening to a band," said Baldwinsville's Larry Conley, a member of noXcuse.

"[Closer Still] makes beautiful harmonies together," added Baldwinsville's Jim Burns, also a member of noXcuse. "They'll add to the variety."

The 10-member male a cappella group noXcuse includes bass baritones Conley and Bob Amidon, baritones John Finkenstadt, Tim Sotherdan and Beili Liu, and tenors Burns, Jim Edinger, Brant Fagan, Bennett Hilenbrand and founder and musical director Seth Hill. The other group members are from all parts of the county. Closer Still is a popular Oswego area trio of sisters with a unique, original a cappella sound, according to Burns and Conley.

The concert benefits the Baldwinsville Christmas Bureau (BCB), a local organization dedicated to collecting and distributing Christmas gifts to needy children and families in Baldwinsville.

"The Baldwinsville Christmas Bureau is a great cause to hold a concert," Burns said.

Admission to the concert is a new, unwrapped child's toy, non-perishable food items or a monetary donation to the BCB (receipts will be available upon request).

While the concert benefits the Christmas organization, don't expect a bombardment of holiday songs. The group will perform a variety of genres at the Presbyterian Education Center, home of the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild, who is generously preparing the stage for the performance.

"This is a good, local cause," Conley said. "It's also a chance for us to sing. We love to sing in front of people and have fun."

More from noXcuse

Formed three years ago from members of the Syracuse Chorale, noXcuse began with five original members. While members have come and gone, noXcuse continues to recruit and grow.
