The Hon. Edward G. Van Der Water, town justice in the town of Van Buren, recently attended the 100th Annual Conference and Certified Advanced Training Session of the New York State Magistrates Association (NYSMA) held at the High Peaks Resort, Lake Placid from Oct. 18 through 21.
More than 270 local judges from across New York State took part in the four-day event, which combines the NYSMA Annual Meeting and Conference with Advanced Training Courses, which are required by New York State for all town and village justices. The NYSMA represents 3,150 active and retired town and village judges.
Judge Van Der Water was installed as president of the NYSMA at the annual meeting. He has served the organization as director for three years, treasurer for two years, vice-president for three years and president elect for one year. Hon. Michael Coccoma, deputy chief administrative judge for the courts outside the city of New York, was the keynote speaker at the installation banquet and swore in Judge Van Der Water as president.
During his acceptance speech, Judge Van Der Water credited Sen. John A. DeFrancisco, who, in his former role as the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, decided to improve, not replace local justice courts. He also thanked Fifth Judicial Administrative Judge James Tormey for his leadership in efforts to defend and improve local courts. Judge Van Der Water described Judge Tormey as one of the first high level judges in the Office of Court Administration to step forward to lead the way.
The purposes of the NYSMA, are to develop better methods and desirable improvements in the administration of the magistrates courts, to promote education and interchange of ideas and experiences of magistrates, and to promote appropriate legislation for these purposes. The SMA works closely with the Office of Court Administration to assure the training enhances the professional development of the judges and is relevant to the practical situations encountered in the local courts.
