Even though it won the regular-season title, the Christian Brothers Academy girls track and field team could not quite duplicate that success during last Tuesday’s OHSL Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus High School.
The Brothers picked up 113 points, beating everyone except Skaneateles, who avenged a regular-season defeat on April 22 by picking up 163 points to finish in front.
Melissa Zajdel swept through the sprints. She won the 100-meter dash in 12.70 seconds, took the 200-meter dash in 25.57 seconds and needed just 57.46 seconds to dominate the 400-meter dash as no one else in the field even broke the one-minute mark.
To cap off her day, Zajdel teamed with Nicole SanGiacomo, Edie Douglas and Nadine Dosa to win the 4×100 relay in 51.36 seconds, 1.2 seconds ahead of Skaneateles.
Carol Giblin worked her way to a victory in the 800-meter run in 2:20.91, while Michaela Gildemeyer (2:26.39) finished fifth. Katie Brislin finished second in the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.35 as Rachel Zajdel (5:02.27) got fourth place.
Betty Etheredge unleashed a winning long jump of 15 feet 6 1/2 inches, an inch and a half ahead of Cazenovia’s Audrey Bowers. Etheredge also got second in the triple jump, going 32 feet 1 1/4 inches.
In the five-event pentathlon, Natalie Sportelli beat the field, the sophomore finishing with 2,082 points as Courtney Hourigan (Jordan-Elbridge) took second with 1,839 points.
Cara Peters (1:14.37) and Julia Quigley (1:15.02) were third and fifth, respectively, in the 400 hurdles, as Peters also cleared 7 feet 6 inches for third place in the pole vault. Ellen Voorheis ran to fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:41.76.
In the boys OHSL Liberty meet, Tom Voorheis gave his team its lone points when he ran 3,200 meters in 9:53.29, seconds to Westhill’s Kevin Zych, who won in 9:48.65.
