The CSX overpass bridge at Peterboro Street will be painted this summer, hopefully before the Boxing Hall of Fame's Induction Weekend. The project was one suggested by Elan Planning and Design, Inc. as part of Canastota's strategic downtown enhancement plan done in 2004. With a $75,000 contribution to the village by CSX, the bridge can be painted sooner rather than waiting for money to become available.
Mayor Todd Rouse said he already received quotes and Holt Painting will do the work for just a little more than CSX's contribution. Another bid came in at $120,000. Rouse said lead abatement is what drove the price up.
The contract includes preparation work of stripping off any old paint. The bridge will be painted maroon with a gold stripe and finished off with a bird repellent over the walkways. The concrete walls will be painted gray. Rouse said he inquired about a cobblestone look over the concrete but the cost was an additional $42,000. The words Canastota will be painted in gold on both sides of the bridge.
In the contract with CSX, the village could agree to have the Main Street overpass bridge painted at some point. If the board chooses not to, then if the village did want to have the Main Street bridge painted latter on, a new contract with CSX would be needed. The board decided at the meeting May 4 to go ahead and commit to getting the other bridge painted.
Rouse noted that although the train derailment in 2008 was not a good thing to happen, CSX has been generous to the village ever since, contributing $10,000 to three organizations, paving the towpath and now contributing the money to have the bridge painted.
Rouse said Holt expects to be done with painting by the first week of June.
