Speed reduction requests denied in Lysander

Lysander officials are upset speed reduction requests were denied.

The town board had requested speed reductions on Deep Glade Drive in Radisson and on Route 370 from DeWitt Drive East to Hicks Road. After reviewing statistics from the two areas, the New York State Department of Transportation denied both requests.

"This is the most despicable thing the DOT has done at least in the past six months," said town councilor Jack Krisanda, who favored a reduction of speed from 45 mph to 30 mph on Deep Glade Drive. This section of the Radisson roadway is between Kerry Hornaday Park and a residential development, an area that has seen a considerable amount of increased traffic over the years due to development. This is also the fourth time the town has made the request to lower the speed limit in the area.

"This is criminal. It shows the DOT doesn't work," Krisanda said adding he would hold the engineer that didn't get out of his seat to physically review the site personally responsible for the first pedestrian that gets hit on Deep Glade Drive.

Councilor Art Levy, who was in favor of a reduction in speed from 55 to 45 along Route 370, said the demand for lower speed was necessary given increased traffic from new developments and businesses such as Abbott Farms and Tabatha's Family Tree Restaurant.

Supervisor Barry Bullis said the process used by NYS DOT to determine whether a road should be granted a speed reduction request "takes the human element completely out of the equation."

"It is what it is. All we can do is just keep submitting [the requests]," Bullis said. He then added a suggested change to the DOT engineers' forms. "They should add 'go out and look at site.'"
