Canastota FBLA top 10 in state

From April 22 to 24, more than 600 members of Future Business Leaders of America gathered at Rochester's Riverside Convention Center for the annual State Leadership Conference. Canastota High School's chapter of FBLA sent nine members to the conference.

Throughout the three-day event, more than 20 students from New York State FBLA campaigned and gave speeches in an effort to seek positions available on the incoming state officer team. Student candidates were required to give speeches, caucus, and answer any questions of the voting assembly.

Canastota junior Tamika Tolliver was re-elected to serve as next year's New York State vice president for District 7. In this capacity, Tamika will be responsible for coordinating all of the activities of the district, which includes Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer counties.

Bonnie Bethea, a Canastota High School junior, finished her year as state historian and delivered her farewell speech on Thursday evening April 23. Bethea was also responsible for preparing the four multi-media presentations that were shown during the conference. She placed fourth in the prestigious Ms. Future Business Leader event.

Erick Wells, also a Canastota High School Junior was appointed as next year's New York State Parliamentarian and is responsible for carrying out Parliamentary Procedure for the entire state-wide FBLA Association.

Two Canastota freshmen, Jerod Gibson-Faber and Joshua Bazan, placed fourth in Management Decision Making and were awarded plaques on April 24 during the annual awards and closing ceremony.

Tamika Tolliver advanced to the final round of Impromptu Speaking.

Canastota's Local Chapter Annual Report, written by Matthew Musacchio, placed third.

At the conference, the Canastota Chapter was recognized as one of the top ten outstanding chapters in the state, receiving fourth place recognition for their efforts during the year. New York State FBLA is composed of nearly 5000 members in 170 chapters.

It was announced at the conference that chapter advisor Elizabeth Garofalo was elected to a two-year term as the New York State FBLA Chairperson.

Canastota members are looking forward to attending the National Leadership Conference being held this June in Anaheim, California.
