Results are in for the 17th Annual Baldwinsville Public Library Photography Contest.
Sponsored by the Baker Studio of Photography and coordinated by Val Chism, the young adult librarian, the annual photo contest is open to all high school students from ninth through 12th grade residing in the Baldwinsville School District. The photos are judged on the merits of their impact, creativity and technical quality.
In this year's juried contest, 52 students submitted 91 photographs. Contest winners will be announced at a library reception Tuesday May 5.
Edwin Baker of the Baker Studio of Photography awarded the $100 cash first prize to Christine Clifton for her photograph "Palindrome." The second place winner, Amanda Kearney for her photograph "El Viento" and the third place winner Alec Scully for his photograph "Beach Chair" received $50 and $25 cash prizes respectively.
The judges' choice awards went to Shawn Weatherly, Erin Lindeman and Andrea Keim. These winners received cross pens. All accepted photos will receive a ribbon and be on exhibit in the Baldwinsville Public Library's Art Gallery during the month of May.
Judges were Jim Dygert of Photography by Jim Dygert, Jon Barden, director of the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild and Photographer Kathy Fox.
"This contest is an example of cooperation between the schools, the public library and the business community and it owes its success to the dedication of Mrs. Patty Johnson, Baker High Photography teacher, the students, the library, and the support of The Baker Studio of Photography," Chism said.
The community is invited to come in and vote for their favorite photograph while they are on exhibit during May to determine who will win the final prize in the contest, the People's Choice Award. The student whose work receives the most votes will receive special recognition and a $10 cash prize. The chosen photograph will be highlighted on display for a couple of weeks in the library.
Baker and his son Kevin, two of Central New York's well-known portrait and wedding photographers, are located at 40 W. Genesee St. in Baldwinsville.
