Baker teacher honored

Jonathan Bowen, retired C.W. Baker High School band director, was recently awarded the 2009 Outstanding Band Director award by the New York State Band Directors Association NYSBDA. The award was for his "outstanding contribution and achievement in music education as a teacher of children. For [his] maintenance of high standards throughout your career in the selection and performance of fine literature."

The plaque was awarded by NYSBDA President, Donald Franklin at the 28th annual symposium held in East Syracuse.

Bowen taught at Baker for 17 years. During this time, the high school concert band, jazz ensemble and marching bands all earned the highest awards at New York State music events including gold with distinction ratings at New York State School Music Association Evaluation festivals and two state marching band championships. He is currently supervising music education students from Ithaca College during their senior year student teaching assignments and adjudicating music festivals throughout the state.
