Mayor of East Syracuse to begin second term

Voters reelected incumbent East Syracuse Mayor Danny Liedka March 18 in an unopposed race for the seat. Liedka, a life resident of East Syracuse, was first elected to the village board in 2003 and has served as trustee, deputy mayor and mayor.

Throughout his terms, there have been significant changes and capital improvements within the village, including municipal building renovations that were completed in 2004, and the 2006 re-opening of the public pool at the new Hanlon Pool Building. The long-awaited drainage projects and sewer installations along Mosher Street will finish up this spring.

Liedka, employed by Doubletree Hotel in Syracuse as a corporate/athletic sales manager, also works for Time Warner Sports, ESPN U and ESPN 360 as color commentator for collegiate and scholastic sports.

Eagle Bulletin Editor Tami S. Zimmerman interviewed Liedka about his recent victory.

Congratulations on your re-election as mayor! As you look back on your first term, what do you feel was your greatest accomplishment?

I am not sure I could single out one thing. Keeping the tax rate stable is the easy answer, but the progress we have made improving quality of life and the progress of our Main Street is great as well.

What do you contribute to the obvious success of your first term, running in an unopposed election?

I flat out work my tail off. Hard work pays off. I can't speak for the opposition, and why they didn't choose to run against me.

What do you think will be your biggest challenge going into your second term?

Taxes and rightsizing our village.

What would you like to say to the people of East Syracuse?

I am very proud to represent them. I love the village and its people, and will go to any length to make it a better place. I read the votes as a stamp of approval, but I don't rest on my laurels, I will continue to progress East Syracuse.

Elected officials

Chad Tolhurst and Jodi Gehrke-Turner were elected East Syracuse trustees. Tolhurst, owner of K-9Kamp Dog Day Care, has served as trustee since last spring. Gehrke-Turner has served as trustee since 2007.

East Syracuse Village Justice Donald Benack Jr., like Liedka, also ran unopposed.
