Lt. Col. Robert S. "Scott" Weichert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Weichert of Baldwinsville, was recently designated as commander of the 9th Airlift Squadron of the U.S. Air Force at McChord Air Force Base, Washington.
Born in Syracuse, Weichert is a 1983 graduate of C.W. Baker High School and received a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Clarkson University in 1987.
Weichert has been in the Air Force for more than 20 years and is a C-17 examiner pilot. He has logged more than 6,000 hours in various aircraft including the C-17A and the C-141B transport planes and the T-37 and T-38 trainer aircraft. His military education is extensive including Squadron Officer School, Air Command and General Staff College and the Air War College.
He entered the Air Force through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) where he received his commission and did his undergraduate pilot training at Vance Air Force Base. His military career has been one of steady advancement. Last year, he finished a tour of duty flying a C-17 for the 313th Airlift Squadron as chief pilot during Operation Deep Freeze in Antartica.
