North Syracuse man charged with assault

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that a North Syracuse man has

been charged with assault after detectives investigate an overnight bar fight.

Leonard J. Zappala II (31), of 6134 Smith Road in North Syracuse, was charged this morning with assault in the



degree, after being involved in a late night bar fight.

Last night at approximately 11:45pm, sheriff's deputies were called to McShane's Restaurant and Pub, located

at 6801 Kinne Street, where a fight was reported. As deputies arrived, witnesses stated that Zappala was at the

bar with friends when they began an argument with other patrons. The argument led both parties out to the

restaurant's parking lot where Zappala is alleged to have assaulted Richard Prall (54), of 3339 County Route

23A in West Monroe.

Witnesses told deputies that Zappala punched Prall in the face,; causing Prall to fall backward onto the

pavement. Prall was knocked unconscious and began bleeding from the back of his head. Family members

called for police and medical personnel. Prall, who sustained a severe injury to the back of his head, was

transported to University Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.

Zappala fled from the scene before deputies arrived on the scene, however he located and taken into custody a

shortly after the incident. Zappala will be arraigned in the Town of Dewitt Court later this morning. Assault in

the 3rd degree is a class A misdemeanor.
