Leonard J. Zappala II, 31, of 6134 Smith Road in North Syracuse, was charged March 11 with assault in the third degree (a class A misdemeanor), after being involved in a late night bar fight, according to Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh.
On March 10 at approximately 11:45 p.m., sheriff's deputies were called to McShane's Restaurant and Pub, located at 6801 Kinne Street in DeWitt, where a fight was reported. As deputies arrived, witnesses stated that Zappalla was at the bar with friends when they began an argument with other patrons.
The argument led both parties out to the restaurant's parking lot where Zappala is alleged to have assaulted Richard Prall, 54, of 3339 County Route 23A in West Monroe.
Witnesses told deputies that Zappala punched Prall in the face, causing Prall to fall backward onto the pavement.
Prall was knocked unconscious and began bleeding from the back of his head. Family members called for police and medical personnel. Prall, who sustained a severe injury to the back of his head, was transported to University Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.
Zappala fled from the scene before deputies arrived, however he was located and taken into custody shortly after the incident. Zappala will be arraigned in the Town of Dewitt Court.
