Duggan appointed medical director of University Hospital

David B. Duggan, M.D., has been appointed medical director of University Hospital. The appointment was announced by Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., chief executive officer of University Hospital and senior vice president for hospital affairs; and Steven J. Scheinman, M.D., senior vice president and dean of the College of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Duggan, a Skaneateles resident, also serves as quality officer of University Hospital and associate vice president for clinical affairs for SUNY Upstate.

Duggan's responsibilities as medical director and chief quality officer fit with his role as associate vice president regarding monitoring and improvement of outcomes, quality and service for the hospital and practices, as liaison between clinical and information systems and in other clinical initiatives as well as his ongoing chairmanship of the Practice Standards Task Force.

Duggan has been a member of the SUNY Upstate Medical University faculty since 1985, serving as chair of the Department of Medicine for 14 years. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate in 1979.

Duggan succeeds Colleen O'Leary, M.D., who served as interim medical director. O'Leary remains as vice chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and medical director for Perioperative Services. She will become president of the University Hospital Medical Staff in April.

University Hospital is a 366-bed facility and is part of SUNY Upstate Medical University. It is the region's only level-one trauma center. This summer, the hospital will open a six-story addition, featuring private patient rooms and the Golisano Children's Hospital.
