Leslie Savage, library media specialist at Palmer Elementary, has been awarded a grant of $936 from the OCMBOCES School Library System. The grant will be used for a collaborative project that the fifth-grade classes of Palmer and Elden elementary schools will be working on this spring.
Students will work in groups to learn how to use online resources to research information, which they will then use to develop public service announcement videos regarding ways to live "green." The project incorporates the fifth-grade science, social studies, English and library curriculums.
Students will learn how to use diigo.com, a Web site that allows users to share research information, store information that they have highlighted from other sites and store bookmarks to other sites, which they can then access from any computer. The grant money will be used to pay for substitutes while Savage and Vicky Gaworecki, Elden's library media specialist, train the fifth-grade teachers on how to use the site before their students learn how to use it.
